Is San Francisco a good place to visit with a dog?
In short: absolutely.
Temperate weather, beautiful views, and easy access to nature have made San Francisco a favorite for lovers of the outdoors for decades. It’s also a city that loves its dogs (almost as much as its light puffer jackets). San Francisco is a Wilderdog favorite, and we’re sharing our go-to tips for dog-friendly adventures that make exploring the city with your pup easy and unforgettable.

Getting Around San Francisco with a Dog
San Francisco is a surprisingly walkable city, so long as you’re okay with trekking a few steep hills. In most neighborhoods, you’ll be within walking distance to coffee shops, restaurants, and parks, though travel across San Francisco can prove to be tricky.
For travel by bus, rail, or even those historic cable cars, San Francisco’s public transit authority (nicknamed “Muni”) allows dogs during off-peak hours. Though there are some guidelines to consider:
“Dogs must be leashed and muzzled and can only ride on the lap of the rider or underneath their seat.”
The full policy can be found on their website here.
Uber Pet is widely available as a quick way to get around the city, though availability can vary by time and neighborhood. You’ll see plenty of self-driving Waymos on San Francisco streets, but they only allow licensed service animals to ride.
The Best Dog-Friendly Parks in San Francisco
San Francisco’s park system is truly one of the best in the country, and offers a great combination of beautiful scenery and comfortable green spaces.
Golden Gate Park:
One of the largest parks in the U.S., Golden Gate Park is located on the west side of the city and truly can’t be missed for people and dogs alike. There are miles of dog-friendly walking paths that wander through redwoods, flower gardens, and open grassy meadows for a picnic or running around. The park is so big that it even has a bison pasture inside of it!
Fort Funston:
The picturesque and extremely dog-friendly oceanside park was previously a military defense base before becoming part of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. It is now filled with trails that wind through hills and lead down to the beach, and it is welcoming to well-behaved dogs off leash. Go on a windy day (most are) and you’re sure to see hang-gliders take off from the park’s bluffs.

The Presidio:
A sprawling National Park located at the very northern part of San Francisco, The Presidio is filled with trails, historical sites, and beautiful views. A great place to soak in views of both the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, Crissy Field is a large grassy area in the park perfect for a picnic or long walk.
Best Dog-Friendly Beaches in San Francisco:
San Francisco is full of dog-friendly beaches. Many are welcoming to off-leash dogs, but be sure to check individual beaches, as there may be changes in their dog policies or certain months with more restrictions. San Francisco’s off-leash rules maintain that a dog must be ‘under voice control,’ meaning that they can be reliably recalled by their owner at any time.
The beaches around the city are also known for rough waters and strong currents, so it’s important to take caution and read surf reports before allowing a dog to swim.
Baker Beach:
If you’re looking for a quintessential San Francisco photo op with your pup: this is the spot. Baker Beach is an extremely popular beach with views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The north part of the beach is off-leash friendly, and is sure to be packed with happy dogs and people if you catch good weather.

Crissy Field East Beach:
East Beach is another great location with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and it has easy access from The Presidio and the Marina neighborhood. There are off-leash areas both on the beach and on the grassy field above it.
Ocean Beach:
Ocean Beach stretches 3.5 miles on the west coast of San Francisco, making it perfect for a long beach stroll. It’s a great place to watch surfers or take in a sunset, but be aware that currents are extra strong, so it’s not the safest place for your dog to take a dip. Dogs should stay on leash near the water’s edge due to unpredictable surf.
Best Dog-Friendly Hikes Near San Francisco
Luckily, San Francisco is a city you don’t have to leave to find beautiful trails. If you have a car available, there are also plenty of great adventures in every direction. Heading north brings you to the rugged Marin headlands or even into redwood forests. Heading south brings you to beautiful wooded forests and views of Half Moon Bay. And heading east brings you to rolling hills and drier climates.
Anywhere in the Bay Area you decide to hike, make sure to wear layers and bring plenty of water. Though days may start off or end with a chill, fog can burn off or roll in at any time, completely changing the weather.
Twin Peaks (San Francisco):
Two hills set in the middle of San Francisco, Twin Peaks offers 360° views of the city and a quick getaway for city residents. There is a 0.7-mile trail that connects the two peaks, and there are trail connections to other greenspaces and vistas. The Twin Peaks and Mount Sutro loop is a 4.4-mile trail that connects the two peaks to a nearby open space preserve, offering a great way to take in sweeping views and get a solid workout without ever leaving the city.
Land’s End (San Francisco):
Land’s End is a protected recreation area located on the northwestern corner of the city. It’s a favorite of tourists and locals alike, offering a chance to experience rugged coastline and beautiful views all while staying in San Francisco. The Land’s End Trail is a 3.4-mile loop that wraps along the coastline. It’s a great morning or evening hike, but weekends can become extremely busy with both dogs and people.
Marin Headlands (Marin County):
Marin is a quick trip north of the city across the Golden Gate Bridge, and it’s a favorite day trip for San Francisco locals looking for a quick outdoor adventure or bike ride. Its high peaks and cliffs have beautiful views of the city, and there are plenty of beaches that are much less crowded than San Francisco’s. The Rodeo Beach, Coastal and Miwok Trail loop is a popular dog-friendly 5-mile hike which offers some steep inclines for a great workout and beautiful views of the ocean and of the city.

Dog-Friendly Neighborhoods in San Francisco
For such a densely populated city, San Francisco has plenty of comfortable and residential neighborhoods that dogs can thrive in, either for a quick visit or a long-term place to live. As with most major cities, there are parts that can be dangerous for late-night walks, so it’s important to conduct some research about specific streets or neighborhoods before booking a stay.

Richmond District:
Located between The Presidio and Golden Gate Park, Richmond District is a neighborhood filled with dog lovers. There are lots of great restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance. The trade-off is that it’s a tucked-away residential neighborhood, but farther from many of the city’s main sightseeing destinations like Fisherman’s Wharf.
Marina District:
The Marina District is a happy medium between the beautiful parks and nature on the west side of the city and the tourist or business destinations on the east side of the city. It runs along the northern coastline of the city, with quick access to scenic walks.
SoMa:
The neighborhood SoMa (South of Market) is much more commercial than the other two neighborhoods listed, but it is a great location if you’re in town for a business trip or want to stay at a larger hotel. It’s on the eastern side of the city, and is a quick walk to great walking paths that run along the San Francisco Bay. It’s also close to Oracle Park and the Chase Center, making it easy to get to Giants, Valkyries, or Warriors games.
